Turmeric and depression: what the evidence says

Based on the evidence, curcumin added to usual care modestly lowers depression scores in short randomized trials, though the trials are small and their quality is rated low.

4/5 Moderate

At least one well-run randomized trial in people on this outcome, with a positive result. How we score

We read 10 of the 22 systematic reviews PubMed lists (the others were about schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis and other conditions) and the 14 largest or most-cited trials: 24 of the 68 human-study records PubMed returned.

Pooled results agree on a small benefit. A 2021 meta-analysis of 10 trials (594 patients) found a standardized difference of −0.32 and three times the odds of responding, but rated the evidence low quality; a 2025 analysis of 15 trials in people with chronic illness found −0.65 with very high variation between trials.

A 2022 international guideline from biological-psychiatry and mood-disorder societies rated curcumin 'provisionally recommended' as an add-on for depression. A 2026 network analysis that kept only low-bias trials reported a curcumin effect for anxiety only, not depression.

Single trials are mixed. The largest, 227 obese adults with type 2 diabetes followed for 12 months in Thailand, and a 123-patient Australian trial found benefit; an Israeli add-on trial of 40 patients and a 30-person crossover found none. Nearly all trials lasted 4 to 12 weeks, and none shows curcumin can replace an antidepressant.

What people report

We read public first-person posts and counted every outcome, good or bad. 3 reports about this condition, read on 2026-10-28; 0 mention side effects.

  • 1Helped
  • 1No effect
  • 0Got worse
  • 0Mixed
  • 1Too early

Why these counts prove nothing on their own: people who post are not a random sample, most take other treatments at the same time, and nobody checks the diagnosis. We show them because they tell researchers what to test next.
