Ashwagandha and sleep and insomnia: what the evidence says

Based on the evidence, ashwagandha root extract modestly improves sleep quality and helps people fall asleep a few minutes faster, mostly in small, short trials from India.

4/5 Moderate

At least one well-run randomized trial in people on this outcome, with a positive result. How we score

A 2021 meta-analysis of 5 placebo-controlled trials (400 adults) found a small but real improvement in overall sleep (SMD -0.59), larger in people with insomnia, at 600 mg a day or more, and after 8 weeks or more.

Several trials measured sleep with wrist movement monitors rather than questionnaires alone. In the clearest one, 60 people with insomnia took 29.0 minutes to fall asleep after 10 weeks on ashwagandha against 33.9 minutes on placebo: a real but modest change. A 2026 trial of 200 adults found ashwagandha alone and melatonin alone gave comparable, moderate benefits.

Most sleep trials come from a small number of Indian research groups, several with authors from the extract makers, and none lasted more than 12 weeks. A Spanish trial using ashwagandha-enriched milk found better self-rated sleep but no significant difference on the standard PSQI questionnaire.

Not everyone sleeps better. Case reports describe confusion with abnormal sleep behaviour, and insomnia with a racing heart after stopping. Among the public reports we read, vivid dreams, early waking and feeling foggy were common complaints.

We screened all 123 records PubMed returned and read 59 abstracts in full (41 tagged as human studies plus 18 trials PubMed had not labelled), keeping 19.

What people report

We read public first-person posts and counted every outcome, good or bad. 7 reports about this condition, read on 2026-10-28; 5 mention side effects.

  • 3Helped
  • 0No effect
  • 4Got worse
  • 0Mixed
  • 0Too early

Why these counts prove nothing on their own: people who post are not a random sample, most take other treatments at the same time, and nobody checks the diagnosis. We show them because they tell researchers what to test next.

  • Helped Started after stopping an antidepressant; slept better and felt calmer within days, later raising the extract dose from 300 to 600 mg. Mental Health Forum, 2022-11-17 (Early reports (days to two weeks); also on quetiapine and melatonin, and had just stopped sertraline.)
  • Worse Years earlier it had the opposite effect: worse insomnia, tension and strong anger hours after a dose. Side effects: worse insomnia, tension, anger. Mental Health Forum, 2022-11-19 (Recalled from years before; dose not given.)
  • Helped Two 150 mg capsules at night: sleeping better, with more vivid dreams; effect on stress hard to judge. Side effects: vivid dreams. Mental Health Forum, 2022-12-02 (About two weeks of use.)
  • Worse A bedtime dose left them awake from 4 am, detached and with a headache; it never worked for them. Side effects: early waking, headache, feeling detached. LongeCity forum, 2018-04-20 (Says L-theanine causes the same reaction.)
  • Worse Strange, vivid dreams left her unsettled and tired; it happened on two separate tries months apart. Side effects: very vivid dreams, waking unsettled and tired. Mumsnet, 2026-09-21 (Two short trials of one to two weeks.)
  • Worse After two nights felt odd and foggy-headed, like starting antidepressants years ago, and stopped. Side effects: feeling odd, foggy head. Mumsnet, 2025-09-12 (Only two doses.)
  • Helped Night waking improved; her Fitbit showed deep sleep up by at least a third. Mumsnet, 2026-01-22 (Consumer sleep trackers estimate deep sleep imprecisely; also tried magnesium.)
